British Grand Prix Trivia Quiz

By Geoff Collins

After the French quiz, when our illustrious editor Chris Balfe referred to me as a twisted gnome (well, I do live in Zürich) I thought that maybe I should make some of the questions easier. After all when someone with as much knowledge as Chris could have got the same score simply by picking the middle answer each time, it could be considered too tricky. But I think pitpass readers are a knowledgeable lot, and there's just too much dumbing down around these days. So it's situation normal and time to find out how much you know about the British GP?

1. The first world championship British GP was in 1950, but we touched on that in the European quiz. So let's look at 1951. Froilian Gonzalez won the race, the first driver to win in a Ferrari. The following three drivers all took part in that event and never contested another one. Which one of them had taken part in a GP before?
Brian Shawe-Taylor
Philip Fotheringham-Parker
John James

2. Four Connaughts lined up on the grid for the 1954 race. What make of engine were they using?
Alta
Bristol
Lea Francis

3. There's a big row brewing over the fighting fund at the moment, and it may well come to a head at Silverstone. Part of the issue is the expense for the teams if they have to run a third car. But how many Coopers were entered for the 1959 race?
15
16
17

4. The 1962 race was the last to be held at Aintree. Climax engines powered 15 of the 22 entrants. Seven of the first eight were powered by the Coventry manufacturer, which engine powered the car that finished fourth?
BRM
Ferrari
Porsche

5. The sight of Jim Clark taking Woodcote in his Lotus 49 during practice for the 1967 race has stayed with me ever since. He duly went on to win the race, but who came second?
Chris Amon
Denny Hulme
Graham Hill

6. The 1971 event was the first to have a full title sponsor associated with it. Was it?
Daily Express
John Player
Woolmark

7. Jody Scheckter can be quite vocal about drivers these days. How many other cars did he take out when he crashed in the early laps of the 1973 race?
7
8
9

8. Scheckter managed to win the 1974 race, but only after Lauda had to stop with a puncture five laps from home. Niki lost a lot of time in the pits as it was blocked and he could only finish ninth. Ferrari appealed - where was Niki actually classified?
5th
7th
9th

9. In 1981, who had an attempt at repeating the 1973 Woodcote accident, but only took out himself and two other cars?
Andrea de Cesaris
Alan Jones
Gilles Villeneuve

10. Which team had a driver excluded from the 1987 race for being refuelled out on the circuit during practice?
Ligier
March
Zakspeed

11. Who lost third place just before the end of the 1993 race when his car ran out of fuel?
Gerhard Berger
Damon Hill
Ayrton Senna

12. In 1997, who narrowly missed pole and then had to give up second place when the car stalled at the start of the parade lap?
Gerhard Berger
Heinz-Harald Frentzen
Ralf Schumacher

13. The 1998 race was a bit wet, to say the least. How many drivers spun off and could not continue?
9
11
13

14. Who qualified on pole for the 2000 race?
Rubens Barrichello
David Coulthard
Ralf Schumacher

15. Who said after last year's race "Our weather forecasting was not as accurate as we would have liked"?
Frank Williams
Jean Todt
Ron Dennis
