Biography

Unlike most of his contemporaries Ryan Briscoe's first taste of competitive motorsport wasn't in Karts but on two wheels, the youngster finishing second in the Australian Junior Yamaha Championship aged 12 in 1993.

The following year he went on to win the Yamaha Championship whilst making a successful foray into Karting and winning the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) Junior Karter of the Year award.

In 1995 Ryan won the Australian Junior International Championship, which he successfully defended a year later, in addition to taking pole in the Junior International World Championship. He was also handed the CAMS Junior Karter of the Year award for the second successive year.

In 1996, in addition to victory in the Australian Junior International Championship, Ryan won the Oceania Junior International Championship.

Over the next few years the Australian youngster continued to impress as he moved out of Australia to compete in the European (1997), North American (1998) and Italian (1999) Kart Championships with the CRG team. Victory in the North American and Italian series bringing him to the attention of Kart manufacturer Tony and car manufacturer Toyota.

In 2000 he came close to winning the Kart World Championship with Tony, indeed he was running third until the last lap when a mistake by a fellow-competitor put him out on the sport. He concluded the year by moving to single-seaters joining the Prema Powerteam for the Formula Renault 2000 Italian Winter Series and the International Renault Finals at Valencia.

2001 was a superb year for the Aussie youngster, now aged twenty. In addition to winning the Italian Formula Renault Championship, he competed in the Formula Renault Eurocup (4th) and the final round of the French F3 Championship in which he finished second.

2001 also saw Ryan make his F1 debut when he tested for Toyota, which was now preparing to enter the World Championship the following year.

In 2002 in addition to his duties as test driver for the Toyota F1 team, Ryan competed in the German F3 Championship and the F3000 Championship with Nordic.

For 2003 he moved up to the Formula 3 Euroseries which he totally dominated, winning the title at Hockenheim with two races remaining.

In addition to his duties in the F3 Euroseries, Ryan continued to work as test driver for the Toyota F1 team, and it's interesting to note that in 2004 the Japanese outfit wants the Australian youngster to concentrate solely on his F1 test role.

Runner-up to Ryan in the 2003 F3 Euroseries was Christian Klien who has since signed to drive for Jaguar in the 2004 Formula One World Championship. It is surely only a matter of time before Ryan makes the move up to a full-time F1 seat and with Mike Gascoyne working on the Japanese team's 2005 car, and Olivier Panis surely destined to retire at the end of the current season, what's the betting that Briscoe is in a Toyota F1 car in 2005, if not sooner?
