Ferrari presents its vision for the future

NEWS STORY
17/02/2015

As the F1 Commission meets in Geneva to discuss the future of the sport, Ferrari looks a little further ahead.

"Would it be possible to come up with an F1 car which not only is technologically advanced, but also captivating to the eye and aggressive-looking?" asks the Italian team on its website. "And could this be made without having to overturn the current technical rules?

"At Ferrari, we believe so. Let us introduce you to the 'concept design' that was conceived by our design studio (Centro Stile Ferrari) together with the Scuderia's aero department.

"Minimal changes give the car a look that is way different from what have been familiar with so far. Our challenge was to create something that was - to put it short - better looking."

Whilst team boss Maurizio Arrivabene recently called for a more Rock 'n' Roll approach to the sport, others are calling for the cars to look more aggressive. At first glance, the Ferrari concept certainly falls into the aggressive category, though, in our humble opinion, it leans more towards LMP1 than purist single-seater.

By an amazing coincidence, the images are released on the same day the F1 Commission meets in Geneva to discuss changes to the sport, the teams (as ever) divided on what changes should be made and when.

Whilst some, such as Ferrari, are clearly taking a futuristic approach, others appear to favour a retrograde step, taking inspiration from the cars of the 1990s.

McLaren and Red Bull have also produced concept cars, but have not made the designs public.

"With the partially enclosed wheels and enveloping bodywork it definately has an Indycar look, and the high sides and wide sidepods bring it, as someone else has said, a stone's throw from a LMP prototype.
Even so, it is still looks more purposeful and sleek than the narrow tracked, high winged, raked nose oddities that we currently have.
I used to be passionate about the sport but for the first time in 40 years I don't care anymore. With Bernie and Todt leading the sport commercially and Regulatory the blind alley it is in will only continue further. The dead hands of dead men...still walking."

"It looks like the combination of a Hot Wheels car and a current Indy Car. Add a few more panels and it is an LMP1 or LMP2 car."

"The biggest problem with F1 is the constant bitching about what is wrong (read their not winning) from team owners, Bernie's complaints about noise (Bernie turn up your hearing aid), FIA complaining about the teams not wanting to play within the rules and all other share holders complaining. What message does that send to the past, present and future followers? Also one must remind Bernie that not all fans can afford a Rolex or a Rolls? If he wants a world audience to be only those, he better sell his R's.

It is time for all involved to start singing the proper song about the pinnacle of motor sports and stop singing their laments about their woes.

"That's hardly an open wheel car and given all of the extra wings, tunnels, and the rather large diffuser, I assume it would make a lot more downforce. Add in the 1000 hp engines Ferrari thinks F1 needs, and you have a car that is way too fast for modern tracks. I'd also love to know what in that design is not overturning the current technical regulations since it seems that nothing in the design, including the driver's helmet, would be legal.

The issues F1 is having right now aren't about the way the cars look. In fact the 2015 cars look great. The problem is that FOM treats the internet like an enemy, searching out Youtube videos to remove for copyright infringement rather than putting their own videos up to appeal to a younger, tech savvy demographic that doesn't rely on traditional TV for their entertainment. It's also suffering from "leadership" who are more focused on telling the world what's wrong with F1 every time they think they can use it for their own political gain within the paddock rather than promoting what's good about the series. Even this exercise involves Ferrari telling the world the series is boring. If Ferrari are calling it boring, what incentive is there for casual viewers to give it a try?"

"Is it slick looking? Yes!
Could you regulate the body kits and still allow for variation? Not likely.

Undoubtedly Ferrari want to become the suppliers of standardized body kits with minor adjustments made
to aero and chassis development by teams. The ultimate customer car concept.

Can you say IndyCars? That's what this brings to mind."

"Yuck!! Really don't like this concept! In many ways it is worse than the 2014/2015 proboscis/whale nose cars. For me F1 cars should be sleek with the main body having a slim profile and straight lines. The front and rear wings should really stand out from the rest of the body, giving an overall sp**** look to the car. There should be minimal flared elements to complete the sleek look. This concept is too "heavy" and "bulky" looking due to the very busy nose elements, sidepods, and especially the rear.

A great example of such minimalist design were the 2010 season cars for example (this image summarizes the cars well http://www.threetwoonestudios.com/images/F1_.jpg).

So, in short, I am all for better looking cars than we currently have to suffer. In spite of the 2015 rule change to the front supposed to stop the phallic noses, we still seem them (Williams) or the baleen whale (Ferrari). Going back to the basics of the early 2000 rules would be terrific, minus all the winglets of course."

"I like it! I've been watching F1 since the mid-60's and F1 car designs were bleeding edge at the time throughout each era.

What's happened over the past 10-15 yrs is too many rules killing innovation. Nowadays, if someone comes up with a great idea, it gets killed in the spirit of "Johnny, you're now too good for the rest of the kids, slow down!" <-- Braun as just one example.

I like this design Ferrari, make it happen!"

"I think it looks better than anything on the grid now...as for it looking like an LMP 1,well Ferrari should rather be there. It is better for the brand, is more honest and they can race against other sports cars and can use the input in their road cars.

"What will Ferrari suggest next to be more "rock & roll"? Drifting? Low Riding? ("I got me a Ferrari with some "bags" dude!!") Racing as a Sport, is really pretty simple; follow the rules for maximum effect to be ahead of everyone else. As with a lot of things in life, the best performers, aren't always considered the best looking. (I drew up an Indy car that looked sort of like the "car" pictured in grade school, 40 <ahem> something years ago. Since then I've learned that for cars, "Artist Renditions" use just a bit to much artistic license for my tastes!) I guess the Senna/Prost battles wouldn't be considered very captivating today because their cars wouldn't be "flashy" enough . . . (Good Grief!)"
