United States GP Trivia Quiz

By Geoff Collins

The talk these days is more about the championship than individual races.
But in the world of trivia, it's still the race that's the thing.
So let's test your knowledge of the American races...

Last year's quiz

1. The Indianapolis 500 used to be included in the World Championship from 1950 until 1960. How many laps was the 1950 event run for?
138
200
202

2. The first "real" US GP was held at Sebring in 1959. The race became famous because Bruce McLaren won, setting a record as the youngest ever GP winner (which stood until Alonso won in Hungary this year) and was the race where "Black" Jack Brabham pushed his car to the finish line to clinch the Championship. But let's go to the back of the grid, which is where Rodger Ward, that year's Indy 500 winner ended up. How many seconds was he behind poleman Stirling Moss, who had qualified in exactly three minutes?
33 seconds
43 seconds
53 seconds

3. How many Ferraris ran in the 1962 US GP?
0
1
3

4. There's a lot of talk about what constitutes "team orders" this year. Well, what do you think about the Lotus tactics at Watkins Glen in 1964? Clark had been leading easily until his fuel injection packed up. So Colin Chapman called in one of his two remaining factory cars and Clark jumped in hoping to get back into the top six. Lotus knew that Clark couldn't score points (the practice of sharing points had been stopped in 1958) but he could still take points away from his championship rivals. As it was, he only managed to get back up to seventh, but which driver was asked to hand over his car to the Scot?
Peter Arundell
Mike Spence
Walt Hangsen

5. Where was Chris Amon running when his engine failed on lap 95 of the 1967 race?
1st
2nd
3rd

6. Another team orders question. In 1975, Lauda and Ferrari already had both champonships sewn-up. But a Ferrari had never won at the Glen, and nobody had ever won the US GP in a year that they won the championship (this is a trivia quiz remember). Lauda was being chased by Fittipaldi's McLaren when they had to lap Clay Regazzoni's Ferrari, which had had a lengthy pitstop. Lauda got past easily, but the Swiss driver held Emerson back for five laps before the race director, Berdie Martin, had him black-flagged to give him a warning. Team Manager Luca di Montezemolo got into a bit of a brawl with Martin but the number 11 car was eventually on its way again. So where did Regazzoni feature on the results sheet?
Retired (Engine overheated after the lengthy stop)
Disqualified (Martin called him in a second time)
Withdrew (Luca got miffed and threw his toys out of the pram)

7. 1980 saw the last F1 race at 'The Glen'. Who lead for the first 30 laps until his Italian electrics failed and his car rolled to a stop?
de Cesaris
Giacomelli
Villeneuve

8. In 1982 there were three GPs held in the US. Which driver scored the most championship points during those three races?
Alboreto
Rosberg
Watson

9. In 1984, who echoed Jack Brabham's car pushing exploits to take the final point?
Alboreto
Mansell
Warwick

10. How many UK drivers were driving cars powered by Renault engines in the 1986 race?
2
3
4

11. In 1990, the US GP at Phoenix was the first race of the season. Alesi put in an impressive drive in his Tyrrell-Cosworth, leading for over 30 laps. Even when Senna passed him, Jean managed to snatch the lead back for a further lap (those were the days) before the order settled down with the Brazilian and the Frenchman finishing first and second respectively. Another driver to show great promise that year was Pierluigi Martini, who finished just out of the points in seventh. Not bad for a Minardi, but in qualifying he'd done a bit better. Where did he line up on the grid?
2nd
3rd
4th

12. In 1991, two new teams made their debuts - Jordan and the Modena Team (Lamborghini). Only one car from each of those teams made it to the grid, but which driver came home seventh in that debut race for his team?
de Cesaris
Gachot
Larini

13. In 2000, BAR got two cars in the points. Jacques would arguably have been third if he hadn't braked just that little bit too late (and thus overshot turn 1) when he overtook whom?
Barrichello
Button
Frentzen

14. With whom was Ralf Schumacher dicing when he spun off in the 2001 race?
Heidfeld
Montoya
Barrichello

15. We'd all like a close finish on Sunday, but it's unlikely to be as close as the two Ferraris were after Schuey suddenly backed off last year. Can you remember who shared the podium with the men in red?
Coulthard
Montoya
Trulli
