Biography

At the age of 12, Bas Leinders finished runner-up in the Promotion Trophy series, taking 8 wins in his GKS-Tecno-Komet. A year later he went one step further and won the title.

In 1989 he was Belgian Junior Champion, successfully defending the tile in 1990 in addition to winning the European Junior Championship.

For 1991 he moved up to Formula A, winning 8 races and taking pole position in the world Championship. Over the next couple of years he was runner-up in the Belgian Formula A Championship, winner of the pre-final World Cup at Suzuka and third in the German Formula A Championship.

In 1994 he switched to single-seaters, winning the Belgian and Benelux Formula Ford titles. The following year he repeated this success in the British and European series.

In 1996, Bas won the European Formula Opel Championship, setting a new record by taking 8 wins. The following year he switched to F3, finishing seventh in the German championship before going on to win the title in 1998.

Between 1999 and 2001 he contested the FIA F3000 Championship, but with little success. Switching to the Telefonica World Series for 2002, he took 4 wins in two seasons.

In addition to his single-seater exploits, Bas has also done quite a bit of Touring Car and long distance racing, including the Spa 24 Hours and the Zolder 24 hours, which he won in 2003 driving the BMW M3 GTR.

Bas got his F1 break in January 2004 when he tested for Jordan. Unfortunately he crashed after just a couple of laps, pitpass immediately renaming him 'Bash' Leinders.

Days before the Australian Grand Prix, Minardi announced that Leinders had secured the role of 'third driver', a position that will have required a sizeable sponsorship budget.

Ignoring Bas' unfortunate F1 debut with Jordan, the Belgian seems an interesting prospect. In Formula Ford and F3 it all appeared to be going well, but then came the three unrewarding seasons in F3000. His exploits in Touring Cars, prove that he loves racing, it remains to be seen whether he has the talent and the desire to make it onto the next step of the F1 ladder.
