"The reason they go on about fastest laps is because fans want to know that info. Does it mean anything? Of course not, but that's never stopped anybody from getting excited when their favorite team tops the timesheet for a day or worry when they run lower than expected."

"Why do "professional" commentators on pre-season testing (such as those at Pitpass, Autosport or the BBC) keep going on about the "fastest times". This information is meaningless - no-one apart from the teams themselves know how much fuel is being carried and what settings the engine system is on so if "A" does a lap that is 2 seconds faster than "B", it does NOT mean that A's car is significantly better than B's. The only useful information for outsiders (like us, the fans) from pre-season testing is how reliable the car / engine combinations are and whether teams are concentrating on long runs or short sprints (i.e. race or qualifying simulations)."
