Rules overhaul put on hold

NEWS STORY
17/02/2015

The F1 Commission has rejected proposals for a change to the rules until at least 2017.

Meeting in Geneva, the F1 Commission was charged at looking at a number of proposals aimed at making the sport more exciting and thereby attractive to fans.

Among the proposals was a call for 1,000 bhp engines, even though the (current) formula was introduced (at great cost) just last year.

Other proposals included wider rear tyres and modification of the design rules aimed at giving the cars a look similar to that of the 90s.

The move to change the regulations - which would have required the unanimous agreement of the teams - comes amidst falling TV audiences and swathes of empty seats at circuits that were previously sold out.

Furthermore, in addition to F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone's constant criticism of the new formula, teams, such as Ferrari claim the sport needs revitalising, with faster, noisier, more powerful, more aggressive cars. Indeed, as the F1 Commission was meeting, the Maranello outfit none too subtlety offered its suggestion as to the route the sport should be taking.

However, with the F1 Commission rejecting any change to the rules in 2016, the mostly minor modifications introduced this year will have to last for the next three seasons.

"Brycevr,
I would like to see less homogeneous designs. Reduce your tired, and I am on board!"

"It's easy, the car has to fit in a box "X" x "Y, It has to weigh more than "Z", it must be "H" in ground clearance and be flat across its plan from 400mm rear of the frontaxle to the rear axle. It can use P amount of petrol and use any power unit of less than 3,000cc without forced induction or 1500CC with a 2bar induction limit. Kers is limited 150kw and useable anywhere. Go to town and let's see if another P34 or Lotus 79 emerges. F1 is about revolutionary technology not hobbling the greatest automotive minds to create a one make series."

"Unfortunately, Canuck, $300 x 5 x four of the party (my family + daughter's boyfriend) only having interest for the race = not good value. $300 for five good seats of my choice (albeit booking early) on race day would have been a better prospect. Anyway, daughter back home earlier than expected, so excuse for going to Canada = early retirement."

"I'll be going to my first ever GP this year but I went to a few of the A1GPs so I can't say much about the live races.

If F1 wants to get new and casual viewers they won't be found on a pay per view channel, that is what F1 seems not get. Casual and new viewers also can't keep up with the endless rule changes and so they lose interest. Then all they hear is how bad it all is and how it's dying - what do we expect?
Teams, drivers, FIA and BE need to actually promote F1. Us fans too.

@kiwi2wheels Is the traffic and things not the same for any other sport? I've experienced that at the cricket and rugby too. Yes you are more comfortable at home and you see more but you don't get the atmosphere at all! The communication with people you don't know about a sport you are highly passionate about! Fabulous!"

"@ Peter Mann - you will never find a better sports/entertainment deal than the Canadian GP. You can get seats for less than $300 for 3 days. Just think about it, almost 24 hrs over 3 days of entertainment for $300. And TV does not give it justice.

As to Rule changes - I agree - do not change them. That is part of the problem with F1, lack of stability in the rules. Too often the rules change drastically and affect the small teams to much. F1 needs the small independent teams. "

"@ Peter Mann

Why bother to go anyway ? Traffic problems, other myriad hassles, cost, etc, and then it's much more comfortable to sit at home and watch TV, have a beer plus you probably see more of the race .

Win , win, win !! Attending is vastly over rated."

"Common sense rules OK! And as the 2014 season proved, there was nothing wrong with the racing.

Engines too quiet? Do you honestly believe the engineers responsible for the new engines had to wait until they, the engines, were first fired up before they knew the sound levels? When the new power unit regulations were being drawn up, they would have had a very shrewd idea of what kind of sound they would make - they would even have said at the time "You realise these engines are going to be quite quiet don't you?" Either the power-that-be wasn't there, wasn't listening or didn't believe them - and now they have been proved right, he's upset.

Of course there are things wrong with F1 - as with any sport. And as Chris Balfe, Pitpass' esteemed editor, is forever pointing out - the cost to fans of being involved, whether attending a race or having to watch it on pay TV, is far too high.

I looked at going to the this year's Canadian GP - but it seemed impossible to buy grandstand tickets just for race day; all three days, no problem, but one day in any grandstand, nothing doing. So we're not going."

"I agree with Ferrari's proposal to go to more simple V8 engines of 1000+ horsepower. I believe that the design regulations have become too restrictive and should be relaxed to permit more creativity."
