FIA pleased with India progress

NEWS STORY
14/02/2011

Following a visit to the circuit which will host the inaugural Indian Grand Prix later this year, the FIA's safety director, Charlie Whiting, is said to be pleased with progress.

Whiting visited the New Delhi circuit on Sunday and according to Vicky Chandhok, President of the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India (FMSCI), he liked what he saw.

"The track is well ahead of schedule," Chandhok told Reuters. "He was very pleased. He liked the track and was impressed by the progress made so far. He suggested some changes which will be incorporated to encourage overtaking."

The news will come as welcome relief to the FIA and FOM as the progress made at the circuit is in stark relief to the delays that have dogged a number of other proposed sporting events in India and in the wake of the furore over the preparedness of the facilities for last year's Commonwealth Games.

Indeed, only last month, serious delays in construction work led to the cancellation of an England v India (cricket) World Cup match.
