Hooray for Bollywood?

NEWS STORY
11/03/2005

As Formula One continues, at Bernie's behest, to fall over itself in an attempt to lure A-list celebrities, by which we mean Hollywood movie stars, and thereby (hopefully) attract a whole new audience, we hear rumours that others believe that it is F1 that could work for them.

Were you aware that the Indian film industry - affectionately known as 'Bollywood' - produces more than 900 films a year, outstripping Hollywood in terms of movies produced, and now attracting a global audience?

Were you aware that Britain is the second biggest market for Indian movies, with the Unites States fast catching up?

Whereas F1 feels it needs Hollywood to sell itself to a wider audience, sources tell us that members of the 'Bollywood' community are fully cognizant that F1 could take their industry into new markets and are now looking to get on board, with the excitement generated by Narain Karthikeyan's F1 debut adding fresh impetus to the drive.

We're not claiming that there will be hundreds of actors singing and dancing on the grid in Malaysia, or even Bahrain, but we do expect to see the Indian movie industry linking up with F1 in the not too distant future, indeed a rumour doing the rounds in Melbourne suggests that former Jaguar Racing media boss Nav Sidhu is pioneering just such a project.

Among some of the other deals that Nav has pulled off was the Ocean's 12 promotion, which saw Brad Pitt and George Clooney link up with the Jaguar team in Monaco last year. Our sources tell us that Nav is pushing ahead with ideas that will make the Oceans 12 partnership, and indeed the Terminator 3 link-up, which he also masterminded, look like "Tom & Jerry".

Then of course there was the infamous Steinmetz diamond that was 'lost' during the same event.

The flawless diamond, embedded in the nose of Christian Klien's car, was 'lost' when the Austrian crashed into the barriers. Although the brilliant gem was (allegedly) never recovered, worldwide media interest in the 'stunt' outshone Jarno Trulli's flag-to-flag win. Now that is brilliant.
