NEWS STORY
With the F2 and F3 races postponed due to the conditions it came as no surprise that FP3 was cancelled.
Over the course of the morning we have had torrential rain, thunderbolts and lightning - which was very, very frightening - but then forty minutes before qualifying the sky began to brighten... indeed, there were even patches of blue.
However, while the rain has stopped, this being a flat, featureless track there is the issue of standing water.
Also, as ever there is the issue of the medical helicopter, and while it may be clear to take off from the track there is an issue in terms of landing at a nearby hospital.
Bottas was quickest in both of yesterday's sessions, ahead of his teammate. Of course, with Verstappen starting from the back of the grid - as is Leclerc - following an engine change, this is something that Mercedes must capitalise on.
Of course, while qualifying as near the front as possible in important for Hamilton, so too is the need to keep out of trouble this afternoon... or whenever qualifying takes place.
Ahead of Q1, the air temperature is 13.9 degrees C, while the track temperature is 17.7 degrees. There is a 60% chance of further rain, warns race control.
In the moments before Q1, Christian Horner admits, understandably, the Perez desperately needs to qualify as near the front as possible.
The lights go green and Gasly leads the way, followed by Sainz, Alonso, Leclerc and Raikkonen. As more cars emerge, all bar Alonso are on Inters. The Spaniard opting for full wets.
As the Mercedes pair head out, so too does Verstappen.
At which point it begins to drizzle...
Understandably, due to the conditions, there are a few wobbles.

Leclerc goes quickest with a 50.292 as teammate Sainz goes third (52.008).
Norris crosses the line at 49.28 only to be demoted when Gasly stops the clock at 49.218.

Giovinazzi spins in Turn 16 and is lucky not to collect Leclerc who was just behind.

Verstappen climbs from his car, the Dutchman's work done for the day.
Ricciardo goes eighth but is demoted when Stroll posts a 49.034 to go sixth.
Alonso switches from the full wets to Inters.
Latifi goes fourth with a 48.252.
A mistake sees Bottas take to the escape road at Turn 2, as Perez goes quickest in the opening sector. The Mexican maintains the pace in S2, finally crossing the line at 46.455.
Alonso goes thirteenth on the Inters, before improving to third (47.990), thereby splitting the Mercedes pair.
A 47.335 sees Bottas go third.
With under three minutes remaining, along with Verstappen, the drop zone comprises Raikkonen, Schumacher, Giovinazzi and Mazepin. Russell, Ricciardo, Tsunoda and Sainz are hovering.

We lose Raikkonen, Schumacher, Giovinazzi, Mazepin and Verstappen.
Q2 gets underway, and with an eye on the skies there is no hanging around as Gasly once more leads the way. Inters remain the order of the day.
"I have no f****** grip," complains Gasly.
Despite having no f****** grip, the Frenchman crosses the line at 46.671.
Tsunoda responds with a 48.423 only to be demoted by Ocon and then Stroll (47.114).
Alonso goes fifth, ahead of Tsunoda, Vettel and Sainz.
No sooner has Norris gone top with a 46.254 that Hamilton bangs in a 46.096.
Russell goes quickest in S1, eventually stopping the clock at 47.335 to go ninth.

While it is understandable that we haven't seen Leclerc, Latifi has also failed to appear.
Ricciardo improves (46.976) but is only tenth.
Bottas told he is losing out to his teammate in S1.
Russell goes eleventh, as Gasly claims he has been impeded by Latifi who has finally appeared.

We lose Vettel, Gasly, Tsunoda, Latifi and Leclerc.
"Nicky chose not to set a time in Q2," reveals Williams. "After discovering a pneumatic problem overnight, the team opted to take a fresh power unit and he will therefore start at the back of the grid tomorrow."

The Mercedes pair are first out for Q3, followed by Perez and Ocon.
Again, Inters are the order of the day.
As they begin their first flying laps, Russell tells his team: "Prep for slicks!"

Hamilton pits but clouts the pit-wall in the process.
Meanwhile, Russell is off the pace in S1.
Hamilton is wheeled back into his garage, the damage seemingly more serious than just a damaged front wing. Teammate Bottas has switched to softs.
Russell can only manage 55.030 but he was surely only testing the limits on that opening lap.
As Hamilton heads out again, all ten drivers are on softs.
The first green to appear on the timing screen is Sainz in S2. Elsewhere, his rivals are not improving.
They begin their final flying laps as Hamilton complains he cannot get any temperature into his tyres.

Stroll goes quickest in S2, but Sainz goes quicker. The Norris even quicker.
Sainz takes provisional pole (42.510), but Norris crosses the line at 41.993.

Vettel is fifteenth, ahead of Gasly, Tsunoda, Latifi, Leclerc, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Giovinazzi, Mazepin and Verstappen.
Not the disaster it could have been but a costly mistake by Hamilton, and yet another strategic error from Mercedes.
That said, with Perez once again qualifying at the wrong end of the top ten it gives the German team, and particularly Hamilton, some much-needed breathing space.
"It feels amazing," says pole-man Norris, "I don't know what to say... it was a manic session.
"I'm extremely happy, thanks to the team as well, they've done an amazing job.
"That crossover session, the lap before I was two seconds down and wasn't very confident we could improve. I risked quite a bit and it paid off."
"Right from the beginning, a very tricky qualifying," adds Sainz. "We did a very good strategy, a pretty strong lap. Unfortunately I was one of the first to cross the line so I wasn't able to exploit the track.
"We'll put on a fight and try and have some fun," he adds, "though starting P2, the dirty side, it's really penalising."
"It's crazy," grins Russell, "second time in the top three... the team have done an amazing job.
There was one dry line and if you were just a centimetre wide, you were on the wet stuff and off.
"Yesterday our high fuel pace was one of our best of the year, so I've got to go for the podium again, nothing to lose."
