Hamilton heads Hungary front row lock-out

Ahead of today's qualifying, the air temperature is 29 degrees C, and the track temperature is 59 degrees.

While the usual suspects in the media continue to focus on the possibility of repercussions following the events of two weeks ago, the rest of us are merely excited by the fact that in this morning's session Lewis Hamilton edged out Max Verstappen by just 0.088s.

Should it remain this close this afternoon we can expect the pair to fill the front row tomorrow and continue their battle.

What we want for the remainder of the season is the sort of excitement and thrill witnessed in those first few corners at Silverstone, not the utter shambles it subsequently became.

Though Hamilton topped the timesheets, teammate Bottas has looked good in every session - on every compound - while Perez has struggled and is unlikely to be able to offer Verstappen the support he will need tomorrow.

Though Alpine appeared to be best of the rest yesterday, today Ferrari looks set to assume the role, though McLaren, as ever, is there or thereabouts.

The Hungaroring is notorious for the fact that it is difficult - but not impossible to overtake on - indeed it was regarded as difficult long before it became the go to excuse for processional races.

Consequently, qualifying well is vital here, for the further back you start the harder your afternoon will be.

Though this morning's session didn't witness the number of incidents we saw yesterday, it remains a challenge, the wind and seemingly ever changing grip conditions making things difficult for all.

Hungary can usually be relied on to spring a surprise or two and other than who might fail to make it past Q1, or Q2, there is the question of giant-killers such as Russell making to Q3.

As Q1 gets underway the screens are still in place outside Schumacher's garage, the German having crashed out of this morning's session.

Tsunoda is first out, the AlphaTauri sporting softs. He is followed by Raikkonen, Giovinazzi and Mazepin.

Tsunoda gets things underway with an 18.163, but this is soon eclipsed by Raikkonen, who crosses the line at 17.963. An 18.055 sees Giovinazzi go third.

As more drivers emerge, among them are Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen.

Bottas and Hamilton trade fastest sector times, the Finn finally crossing the line at 16.610. Hamilton responds with a 16.424.

Fastest in the opening sectors, Verstappen bangs in a 16.214, 0.210s up on his nemesis.

Gasly goes fourth (16.874), ahead of Norris, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Giovinazzi.

Perez split's the McLarens with a 17.300 but it isn't enough, far from it.

Vettel goes eighth with a 17.666, only to be demoted when a 17.123 puts Alonso 6th.

No sooner has Leclerc gone sixth than he is demoted by his Ferrari teammate who posts a 16.649 to go fourth.

However, on his cool down lap Sainz appears to impede Gasly who was on a hot lap.

With 5 minutes remaining, Russell remains 17th, 2.038s off the pace, whilst Perez has slipped down to 9th.

Tsunoda, Russell, Latifi and Mazepin comprise the drop zone, with the Alfa pair, Vettel, Ricciardo and Stroll hovering.

Whilst Verstappen stays put, the Mercedes pair head out again, Vettel desperate to overtake Hamilton as they head out on to the track. Norris also heads out, though his sixth place appears safe.

Haas confirms - as if we didn't know - that Schumacher will not be coming out to play.

PBs in the opening sector for a number of drivers but no big surprises.

Russell remains 17th and fails to make the cut, while Vettel goes 8th and Ricciardo remains 13th.

Raikkonen goes 14th, thereby demoting Ricciardo, as Stroll goes sixth with a 17.038.

Quickest is Verstappen, ahead of Hamilton, Bottas, Sainz, Gasly, Stroll, Norris, Leclerc, Vettel and Alonso.

We lose Tsunoda, Russell, Latifi, Mazepin and Schumacher.

And so to the all-important Q2, the phase decides which tyres the leading ten will start tomorrow's race on.

Bottas is first out, followed by his teammate and Verstappen. Perez and Raikkonen are also keen to get to work.

While the Bulls and Black Arrows are on mediums, the rest are on softs.

Bottas has the edge on his teammate in S1, but Verstappen goes quicker. In S2 Hamilton has the edge, and at the line it's a 17.083 from Bottas, a 16.553 from Hamilton and 16.769 from Verstappen.

Perez goes fourth, 0.650s off Hamilton's pace.

A 16.972 sees Vettel go third, as Gasly goes fourth and Norris seventh, the McLaren driver quickest of all in S3.

As Alonso goes quickest in S2, Verstappen goes quickest in S1 before backing off. Alonso goes third overall with a 16.906.

A 17.291 sees Ricciardo go ninth.

As Leclerc goes second (16.725), teammate Sainz crashes at Turn 4.

"I crashed, sorry guys," he reports as the session is red-flagged.

As was often the case yesterday, the crash appeared to be a combination of poor rear grip and the wind.

With the clock stopped at 06:39 remaining, Sainz and Giovinazzi have not posted times, while Norris, Stroll and Raikkonen are in the drop zone.

Hamilton is quickest, ahead of Leclerc, Verstappen, Alonso, Vettel, Gasly, Bottas, Perez, Ocon and Ricciardo.

Perhaps tellingly, Leclerc reports that his car felt more "twitchy" than in Q1.

The session resumes but there is no immediate rush to action.

With 03:45 remaining, Leclerc breaks the deadlock, the Ferrari followed by Gasly, Alonso and Bottas.

While Perez and Verstappen switch to softs, as does Hamilton, Bottas sticks with the mediums.

In clear air, Leclerc goes quickest in S1, but Verstappen goes quicker.

Again Leclerc is quick in S2, but again the Red Bull driver is quicker.

At the line Leclerc posts 16.574, and while Gasly momentarily goes quickest (16.394), Verstappen bangs in a 15.650.

Alonso goes third, Ocon seventh and Ricciardo ninth.

Norris goes second and Vettel tenth, which drops Ricciardo into the drop zone.

In the midst of all that Hamilton dropped to sixth and Bottas eighth. However, the Mercedes pair will start on the mediums, while the Bulls will be on softs.

Quickest is Verstappen, ahead of Norris, Gasly, Perez, Alonso, Hamilton, Leclerc, Bottas, Ocon and Vettel.

We lose Ricciardo, Stroll, Raikkonen, Giovinazzi and Sainz.

Gasly leads the way as Q3 gets underway. He is followed by Norris, Alonso, Leclerc and Ocon... though Verstappen and the Black Arrows are also keen to get going.

The only driver not to appear is Vettel.

As Verstappen begins his flying lap, orange smoke billows from the stands.

Gasly posts a 16.699 to get things underway, with Norris going second with a 16.877.

Ocon goes quickest with a 16.660.

Leclerc goes quickest with a 16.646, but is demoted by Verstappen, Bottas and finally Hamilton, the Briton stopping the clock at 15.419, 0.565s up on Verstappen.

Perez goes fourth (16.421), ahead of Leclerc, Ocon, Gasly, Alonso and Norris.

"There is no grip, I don't know what happened," admits Gasly, who is told that the wind has picked up.

With his rivals in the pits, Vettel heads out on to a clear track. A 16.750 sees the four-time world champion go eighth.

As they head down the pitlane ahead of the final run, Hamilton is going as slowly as humanly possible, with Verstappen (and Perez) tucked in behind.

While he eventually move on, further around the track Hamilton once again eases off and backs up towards Verstappen behind.

For a brief moment it appears that Verstappen and Perez haven't crossed the line in time, but in fact it is only the Mexican who has failed.

Bottas improve but remains second, while Verstappen also improves but remains third, Hamilton claiming pole even though he didn't improve.

Definite gamesmanship from Hamilton that will only add to the bad feeling. Indeed, there appear to be people jeering in the stands.

Hamilton claims pole, ahead of Bottas, Verstappen, Perez, Gasly, Norris, Leclerc, Ocon, Alonso and Vettel.

Ricciardo will start eleventh, ahead of Stroll, Raikkonen, Giovinazzi, Sainz, Tsunoda, Russell, Latifi, Mazepin and Schumacher.

As the drivers climb from their cars, there are indeed boos, though as Verstappen removes his helmet they turn to cheers.

"The whole weekend we've been a bit behind and it showed in qualifying," admits Verstappen. "We're still there in P3 and we'll see what we can do, but not what I want.

"The grip is higher on the (soft) tyres," he adds, "so it will give us an opportunity off the line."

"In Q2 I lost the rhythm slightly when we had to use the mediums tyres so it wasn't easy," says Bottas, "and I had a small lock up.

"Tomorrow will be exciting, all to play for and it should be a good battle. I'm looking forward to it."

"Amazing qualifying lap," says Hamilton, the Briton almost drowned out by the booing and jeering, "amazing team work from everyone, Valtteri included, to try and push the car forward.

As MC, Johnny Herbert tells the crowd not to boo, Hamilton adds: "I don't mind the booing, it just fuels me."

So, Mercedes locks out the front row, and will start the race on the more durable medium tyre to boot.

The Red Bull is very much in the mix, Verstappen will be stunned to have lost out by 0.4s to his rival.

As if this wasn't enough, we have the prospect of a thrilling battle behind, with Gasly, Norris, Leclerc joined by the Alpines and Sainz looking to work his way back from 15th.

Let's just hope we get the battle we deserve... and no silliness.
