With some claiming that even at the best of times the mirror on an F1 car is about as effective as a chocolate fireguard, the new regulations for 2017, not to mention this year's introduction of the Halo device, has compromised their use even more.
From this weekend however, teams have the official all-clear to mount mirrors to their Halos, providing that they meet with all current regulations including their dimensions.
"We expect that you will be able to satisfy us that the installation is sufficiently rigid to ensure that the mirror does not vibrate too much, which would limit driver visibility." said the FIA's single-seater technical boss Nikolas Tombazis in a directive sent to all the teams.
"We will not accept a dual mirror mounting (halo and traditional survival cell)," he added, "as this could cause delays in the event a rescue team had to remove the halo following an accident."
However, team may not install the new Halo mounted mirrors with cameras even if requested to do so by Formula One Management.
"We will not accept a cable or connectors to run through the halo fairing," said the directive, "hence in the rare case when a team is asked to mount cameras in the mirrors (position 1 of Drawing 6 of the Technical Regulations), that team would have to resort in using a mirror installation on the chassis or side pod."
