"This article is nonsense," was the brief response when Pitpass asked if there might be the teeeny-weeniest smidgeon of plausibility in the Daily Mirror's claim that Jenson Button could head to Renault if he doesn't stay with McLaren in 2016.
The tabloid claims that Button could be "offered a lifeline" by the French company which yesterday issued a Letter of Intent in terms of the potential acquisition of the Enstone outfit.
Claiming that Button would "be driving a competitive car", albeit currently competitive as it is fitted with the Mercedes power unit, the Mirror says the move would "offer Button a route out of McLaren".
However, speaking at the weekend, Ron Dennis insisted that he would not trigger the 'notice to terminate' option in Button's two-year contract, and that therefore if Button is racing next year it will be at the wheel of a McLaren. Indeed, Button has himself recently made clear that he will race for McLaren in 2016 or not at all.
