Ever since Jeremy Clarkson was dropped by the BBC, his colleagues Richard Hammond and James May subsequently leaving the show also, speculation over who might form the new team has mounted.
Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans was subsequently announced as one of the show's new presenters, but now the Daily Mail is claiming him that Jenson Button will join him.
"An announcement is imminent," a source told the tabloid, a four-word quote that appears to be the basis of the entire story.
Amidst claims that Button might move to Williams to replace Valtteri Bottas, bearing in mind that McLaren has Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne waiting in the wings, the Woking team, which has an option on the Briton for next year, made it clear that it has no intention of releasing him.
In a recent fan survey, Button, along with Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso, was voted the most popular driver, and the 2009 world champion is popular not only with fans but sponsors and the media.
Neither the BBC, which makes Top Gear, or Button is commenting on the claim.
