Michelin has confirmed that it is interested in returning to F1 as sole tyre supplier in 2017.
The French manufacturer confirmed its desire on Twitter, stating: "We have submitted our F1 proposal to the FIA 18 inch of course and #drivetothemaxtire for the driver pleasure."
Currently, Pirelli is the sole tyre supplier, the Italian manufacturer halfway through its second three-year stint which concludes at the end of next season.
Crucial to Michelin's return to F1, having left at the end of 2006, is the move to 18 inch low profile tyres, which, while the French manufacturer insists will benefit the sport - and tie-in with the tyres it already supplies to Formula E and WEC, Pirelli insists would not benefit the sport. Indeed, it is claimed the move would drive up costs as suspension systems and brakes would need to be redesigned.
Furthermore, since returning to F1, other than being extremely compliant in terms of providing tyres that degrade in-line with the sport's powers-that-be desires, in terms of 'entertainment', Pirelli has spent a small fortune on trackside advertising, all of which has gone into the sport's coffers. Should it return, Michelin would be expected to invest similar amounts.
