Maldonado gets grid penalty

NEWS STORY

Pastor Maldonado is the second driver to fall foul of the complicated new power unit component rules, picking up a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race.

Following Daniil Kvyat's penalty in Singapore, today Maldonado was handed a grid penalty after he used his sixth Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) in FP1, a breach of Article 28.4a of the 2014 Formula One Sporting Regulations.

A number of other drivers including Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen are perilously close to their component limits, with some fearing the complicated new rule will turn off fans once it starts to make its full impact felt in terms of penalties.

Should the full ten-place penalty not be applied this weekend - the result of the Venezuelan not qualifying high enough up the grid - it would be carried over until next week at Sochi.
