Jean-Eric Vergne has been handed a ten-place grid penalty for Sunday's Grand Prix following an incident in today's second practice session.
In the final moments of the session the Frenchman ground to a halt in Turn 3, his right-rear wheel still negotiating Turn 1.
Having heard from team representatives, examined video evidence and inspected the relevant parts of the car, the Stewards ruled that the team had breached Article 23.12 (b) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and Article 14.7 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and Technical Directive TD/01713, and consequently handed Vergne the grid penalty whilst fining his team €30,000.
"This is regarded as a serious offence and the Stewards are of the opinion that this was a significant breach of the safety requirements," read the official statement. "The Stewards request the FIA Technical Delegate to satisfy himself as to the compliance of the two Toro Rosso cars with Article 14.7 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations and Technical Directive TD/01713 prior to their further participation in the Event. The FIA Technical Delegate is also requested to examine all other cars in the Event to confirm compliance with Article 14.7 and TD/01713.
