Gearbox problems ended Valtteri Bottas' final practice session after just two laps, the Finn left stranded in the garage for much of the session.
Speaking to Sky F1 during the session the teams technical director Pat Symonds confirmed the gearbox would need to be changed ahead of qualifying.
Pastor Maldonado and Marcus Ericsson both had ERS changes heading in to final practice though they were not penalised as they were able to use another of the five units available.
There is no such grace for gearboxes meaning whatever happens the Finn will drop five spots from his qualifying place as, it is thought, will Esteban Gutierrez who is also understood to be changing the gearbox on his car.
