Michael Schumacher's family admitted that it had been "moved to tears" by a silent birthday tribute to the German ace outside the hospital where he is fighting for his life.

"The incredible sympathies shown today by the Ferrari fans outside the hospital has utterly overwhelmed us and moved us all to tears," read a brief statement on the driver's website. "We are deeply grateful for it and also for all the heart-warming and heartfelt wishes for Michael to get well soon, which have reached us from all over the world."

Several hundred fans made the trip to the Grenoble hospital where the seven-time champion remains in an induced coma, his condition still "stable" but "critical".

The fans, most of whom were wearing Ferrari colours, came from all over Europe, and were responding to the Italian team's call to pay tribute to the German on his forty-fifth birthday.

Also visiting the German over the course of the day were his father Rolf and brother Ralf, joining Schumacher's wife Corinna, son Mick and daughter Gina-Maria at his bedside.

Carrying toys, flowers, letters and placards that read "Schumi, all our thoughts for you and your family" and "Sempre Schumi", the fans paid silent tribute to their hero throughout the day.

Then, when night fell, by means of a light projector on the facade of the hospital, the fans sent the message: "45. Schumi: Stay Strong, Keep Fighting".
