The mirrors on racing cars are not always adequate and, besides, they require drivers to use them at periods of greatest stress. Mike Lawrence has an idea.
He writes:
Many road cars are now fitted with audible parking sensors and you can buy an add-on kit for a few pounds. Some are now available with audio and visual warnings of potential collisions.
Why not supplement mirrors with a visual warning of the nearness of a competitor? A driver has enough to do so it should not be obtrusive, but could be picked up by a driver's peripheral vision.
I propose a vertical line of small, intense, lights on each side of the instrument binnacle. If another car is closing on the right, the right hand line would begin to light from the bottom. When the lights are all lit, it really is time to pay attention.
I've run it up the flagpole, be interested if anyone salutes.
