While Australia may currently boast two drivers in motor sport's top flight, the local racing scene has taken a significant hit.
On Tuesday it was announced that the national Formula Ford championship, established in Australia in the late 1960's, will not run next season. The category lost backing from Ford last year, while in May the company announced it would cease local manufacture in October 2016.
Mark Webber competed in the Australian Formula Ford series before heading to Europe in the mid 1990's, while Daniel Ricciardo raced at state level in Western Australia.
State level series are set to continue however it does create a substantial void at the foot of the motor sport ladder... not to mention "dropping the arse out of the second hand FFord market" as one local put it.
