Although the F318 is a vast improvement on its predecessor, Stefano Domenicali insists the car is unlikely to be the quickest once the F1 circus arrives in Melbourne.
Despite being very much on the pace in testing, Felipe Massa was quickest in Jerez and teammate Fernando Alonso second quickest in Barcelona, Domenicali urges fans of the team not to get carried away, insisting that there is still much work to do.
"The situation at the moment seems to be alright, alright with the programme that we have," he told reporters at the Motor Sport Hall of Fame. "The target is to be close together with the leading cars… I would be very surprised if it was the quickest car at the first race. But if we are all close together in a couple of tenths, then the season is really long and everything is possible.
"We need to make sure we are close to the best car," he added, "and then the team and the driver has to make the difference."
