FIA safety delegate and race director Charlie Whiting has revealed that the sport's governing body is investigating the legality of the new rear wing on the Ferrari.

"We are aware of the development on the Ferrari rear wing and we are currently discussing it with Ferrari," he told reporters in a rare press conference this afternoon.

When asked if the team will be allowed to use the wing for the remainder of the weekend he replied: "That will depend on what we decide tonight. It's a very clever interpretation of the rules and we've got to decide whether we think it's a good interpretation of the rules."

When asked what aspect of the wing they were investigating, Whiting said that it possibly contravenes Article 3.10.3 of the 2011 technical regulations, specifically the slot gap separators on the wing.

"They are devices which are normally just vertical," he said, "two of them typically on each wing, which keep the distance between the profiles constant. These separators can't be more than 200mm apart... it's an alternative interpretation of that rule that we are currently discussing."
