Having already dismissed the proposed formula for 2013, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has also rubbished the current rules claiming they are producing artificial racing.

"We have gone too far with artificial elements," he told CNN. "It's like, if I push footballers to wear tennis shoes in the rain.

"To have so many pit stops," he continued, "I want to see competition, I want to see cars on the track. I don't want to see competition in the pits. In the last race there were 80 pit stops. It's too much. And the people don't understand any more because when you come out of the pits you don't know what position you're in.

"I think we have gone too far with the machines, too many buttons," he added. "The driver is focusing on the buttons, when you have the authorisation to overtake. We have gone too far."

The Italian is also left cold by many of the circuits that have been added to the calendar in recent years. "They are terrible!" he moaned. "It's impossible to overtake! I can only accept one Monte Carlo once, every fifty years!"
