The Lotus Renault GP team - formerly Renault, formerly Benetton - is to race under a British licence next season it has been revealed.
Much of Renault's stake in the team was bought by the Luxembourg investment firm Genii Capital in December 2009. One year later, Group Lotus, owned by Proton, manufacturers of Lotus road cars, bought into the team leaving Renault with no stake at all.
Speaking in Birmingham, where the team unveiled its proposed livery for 2011, team principal Eric Boullier confirmed the decision to race under a British licence claiming that the move is because Lotus is an English manufacturer.
This means that France, which gave Grand Prix racing its name, has virtually on involvement in F1, with no race, no drivers and no team.
