Formula One racing is better without refuelling, says three-time world champion and former team owner Jackie Stewart.

Known for his work on safety, the Scot believes a ban on refuelling is good from a safety perspective, as well in terms of competition.

"I think it's good not to have refuelling because sooner of later there would have been a bad fire and it's better not to have that," he told Pitpass.

The 70-year-old also believes the racing now more closely resembles the racing of his era.

"The same animal's concerned," he said. "That's to say the drivers are the same. It's more challenging for the drivers, it takes a different skill all together and of course the top guys will handle it very well."

Stewart also gave his opinion on the season opener in Bahrain, which has been dubbed Bore-rain by some.

"You occasionally do get a dull race, and it was a dull race," he admitted, "but that's not representative of what's coming. It's going to be one of the most competitive seasons that we've had for a very long time."
