Monaco: Official Preview

NEWS STORY

This weekend marks the second round of the 2009 GP2 Series season, which takes place in Monaco, a low-grip, bumpy street circuit considered as the most prestigious challenge of the championship by both racers and fans alike. Drivers have no margin for error on the twisty streets of the Principality, and their concentration levels are pushed to the limit from the first minute of free practice until the flag drops at the end of the sprint race.

Two weeks ago in Barcelona the new GP2 season kicked off in style with Barwa's Romain Grosjean scoring eighteen points after claiming pole position along with a win, a podium and a fastest lap, while Edoardo Mortara made sure that his name would be remembered by and claimed his first GP2 win in the sprint race. The young Italian currently stands second in the drivers' championship with ten points, with Jerome d'Ambrosio on the same score: the Dams' sophomore continued his impressive GP2 Asia Series form by opening the new season with two podiums.

But now all eyes and focus are focused on Monaco. This venue is often considered to be the personal property of ART's Pastor Maldonado, who won the GP2 race here in 2007 and snatched pole position again in 2008 but just failed to repeat the win. This year he has every intention to shine once more in the streets of Monte-Carlo, but twenty-five other drivers, all hungry for the win and glory, have no intention of letting him have his moment in the sun.
