Ocean Racing Technology have recruited Alvaro Parente to take part in their 2009 GP2 Main Series campaign. The Portuguese driver has joined Indian racer Karun Chandhok to form a fast and experienced line-up. Tiago Monteiro and Jose Guedes had previously revealed that they were looking to find a fast and reliable Portuguese pilot and their negotiations with Parente proved successful and very pleasing for the Ocean Racing Technology team.
"Alvaro Parente is a fast and focused driver and he has a knack to adapt to a new team, car or championship. We are delighted to welcome him on board and we think that together with Karun and the team's great work we will have what it takes to be competitive right from the start of our maiden year in the GP2 Main Series. We have analyzed several options with the aim to put our confidence in the best driver and the fact that Alvaro is Portuguese is a plus for our team," explained Tiago.
Alvaro Parente's talents had aroused their interest for several years. Champion of English Formula 3 in 2005 and of Formula Renault 3.5 in 2007, Álvaro made his debut in GP2 the following year and his talent was confirmed by a victory in Barcelona in his rookie appearance. In January 2008, Alvaro had his first experience of Formula 1 with Renault at the Jerez circuit in Spain and he is now determined, motivated and eager to take up a new challenge:
"I am really happy that we made a deal with Ocean Racing Technology. The season should be exciting but we'll have to work hard to secure some good results as everything's new to the team. This is quite a challenge but I'm convinced that the team's work will pay off very soon as Ocean Racing Technology is a very professional team. To drive for a Portuguese team is another new motivation as I'll be able to defend my national flag and I'm sure we'll benefit from the help and support of the Portuguese audience."
Team manager of Ocean Racing Technology Dave Ward could not be happier, agreeing that with two very fast and experienced drivers they will be well prepared for a good first season:
"Ocean Racing Technology is motivated and optimistic. With Karun Chandhok and Alvaro Parente we have every reason to be optimistic as we have a line-up of experienced and fast drivers, one of the best in the championship. I think all the parameters are gathered for us to fight for the win at the end of the season. Ocean Racing Technology is a young team but under the direction of Tiago Monteiro and José Guedes we have already shown what our determination and potential is. With Alvaro and Karun, we're sure the team will be able to honour the Portuguese colours," he said.
Alvaro Parente will join Karun Chandhok and the other members of Ocean Racing Technology in order to take part in the first collective tests on the Paul Ricard circuit from March 11-13. The team has already planed another test session at the Circuit de Catalunya from March 23-25. The GP2 Main Series will officially open its doors at the same circuit on May 9-10.
