Less than 24 hours after the French Motorsport Federation (FFSA) announced that it was cancelling the 2009 French Grand Prix, citing financial reasons, the FIA has revealed that it is writing to the organization since it has yet to be officially notified.
"The FIA secretary general has written to the president of the FFSA today to seek an urgent clarification of the situation," a spokesperson for the FIA told Pitpass. "Up until today we have heard nothing and we are gravely concerned."
The cancellation of the 2009 event came like a bolt out of the blue, not just to fans, the teams and the FIA, but to the French media and government, and since yesterday's announcement there has been widespread condemnation of the way in which the FFSA has handled the situation.
The cancellation of the race means that the 2009 calendar drops to 17 races.
