Renault has revealed that David Coulthard will use the same engine this weekend that he used at Silverstone and Hockenheim.
Currently, drivers only have to use an engine for two consecutive events, however, Renault's Fabrice Lom, the man responsible for the coordination of the French team's power-plants at Red Bull, has revealed that the decision is tactical.
"First of all his V8 has not done too much running," said the Frenchman, "and we are not especially worried about its reliability.
"Plus, having our two drivers out of synch on the engine cycle means that we won't be putting all our eggs in the same basket," he continued.
"This decision will also help us in the second half of the season in terms of the logistical challenge. And finally, it means that David will not have to use the same engine in Spa and Monza, which are two of the toughest challenges on the calendar."
This is the first time that Renault, or indeed any engine manufacturer, has made such a decision. That said, while Coulthard's engine went the distance in Germany, the Scot crashed out on the opening lap at Silverstone.
