Etihad Airways has signed a three year deal to be the title sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, starting with the inaugural race in 2009.
The seven-figure deal will see the race in the UAE's capital city named the "Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix" until 2011. It also provides Etihad with a major trackside advertising package and podium branding for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The deal was secured by Allsport Management, part of the Formula One Group, and was officially signed by James Hogan, Etihad Airways' chief executive and Bernie Ecclestone in London.
Mr Hogan said: "To have secured the title sponsorship for the inaugural Grand Prix and beyond is a tremendous honour for Etihad Airways and will enable the airline to increase its reach to a global audience."
Commenting on the deal, Mr Ecclestone said: "Securing a title sponsor of this calibre two years out from the first event is further reinforcement that the region is full of excitement and anticipation for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix."
As part of its title sponsorship Etihad will offer its customers a series of all-inclusive packages that include flights, accommodation and Grand Prix tickets.
Mr Hogan added: "The race will be an historic occasion for the UAE's capital and Etihad looks forward to welcoming thousands of F1 spectators from across the world to Abu Dhabi."
Construction of the 5.6 km Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit is well underway on Yas Island, a natural 2,550 hectare island located to the east of Abu Dhabi island. It will be one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, and will include iconic grandstands for the ultimate in spectator entertainment.
In addition to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Etihad Airways has established an impressive portfolio of sports sponsorships in 2007 which includes becoming the official airline for Chelsea Football Club and lead sponsor for Harlequins Rugby Football Club.
