Adrian Newey crashed the lightweight Jaguar E-type he was due to share with Bobby Rahal in practice at the Goodwood Revival Meeting on Friday.

He was subsequently taken to St Richards Hospital in Chichester where he was detained overnight having apparently been unconscious for 90 minutes. He was allowed home the next day.

The really curious aspect of the accident was that it happened on the Lavant straight, when Newey was trying to avoid another car. It was therefore quite a fast, major shunt. This was Newey's second major accident in historics, having crashed his Ford GT40 at a Mulsanne chicane at Le Mans earlier this year.

Dario Franchitti was also taken to hospital having crashed the similar car of Bernie Carl, which he was due to share with former Grand Prix driver and Arrows team owner Jackie Olivier. However, although he was also detained overnight, Franchitti wasn't so seriously 'knocked about' as Newey.

Two other members of the Red Bull Racing team, of which Newey is technical director, were also racing at Goodwood: team principal Christian Horner and regular race driver Christian Klien, in the Cobra of RAC TT eventual winner Juan Barazi. However, the car suffered a mechanical failure before Horner got a chance to drive. Klien starred in an Austin A40 the previous day.
