Minardi boss Paul Stoddart, who leaves F1 at the end of the season, having sold the Italian team to Red Bull, has warned that Formula One is heading towards a split that will end the sport as we know it, unless the manufacturers and teams can get those that run the sport - Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA, not to mention the Banks - to agree to new proposals regarding the governance of the sport.

"I think we are heading now, sadly, towards two series," he told reporters at Suzuka. "The manufacturers have made a very clear statement that they want a fair and equitable Formula One which they feel that there currently is not.

"I think that's going to give rise to the two championships which everybody fears but I can't see Max Mosley backing down and equally I can't see the manufacturers backing down.

"I suppose the net result of that is there will be, most likely, two series in 2008," he added.
