Contrary to reports elsewhere, BMW has no current plans for a shoot-out for its second seat, alongside Nick Heidfeld, in 2006.

It has been speculated that Jacques Villeneuve, who is one year into a two-year deal with Sauber, which has now been purchased by BMW, might face a shoot-out with other hopefuls, however the German manufacturer insists that this is speculation in the media and therefore refuses to comment.

However, BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen, says: "As far as Jacques Villeneuve is concerned, there are contractual issues which stretch beyond the current season. His performances, especially over the first half of the season, have proved the theory that you can't immediately reproduce your previous level after a period away. This is especially true when you return to a new team.

"After completing the deal with Sauber, we therefore decided to take a look at Jacques in as many races as possible in order to gain our own impression. Having now concluded an agreement with Nick Heidfeld, we will turn our attention to this issue."
