Although others might be getting carried away, and citing Fernando Alonso as the World Champion elect, the Spaniard refuses to get carried away.
Comprising 19 rounds, the 2005 World Championship season is the longest in the sport's history, and Fernando is only too aware that a lot can happen between now and China.
"It's too early to know what will happen this season," he said. "But what's sure is that I've never been in such a good position to fight for the championship.
"In 2003, we were quick on some circuits but not others. In 2004, we were quick at the start of the year, but not the end. This year, Renault seem like the best team... at the moment"
"I am the first Spaniard to be in this position," he added, referring to his current position as championship leader, "and it's a fantastic feeling for a young driver. It's a dream come true."
Looking ahead to Bahrain, he remains cautious.
"The car was not good there last year," he admitted. "Our rivals will get closer for sure: Toyota, Williams and McLaren will make life hard for us. Ferrari will be back when they have fixed their problems. Michael will be fighting up there, for sure. We need to make the most of their drop in speed to score as many points as possible, because I am sure we will have difficult races this year as well. We need to score as many points as possible while they are struggling."
