With six races of the 2004 season remaining, and Ralf Schumacher possibly not due back in the FW26 until Belgium or possibly Italy, BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen knows that the Anglo-German team has its work cut out.

"We had a very difficult first part of the season," said the German. "However, I think we are gaining ground and we are coming back slowly but steadily. That's what any kind of sport is about. You have strong phases, when everything goes well, then you have difficult times and have to fight. WilliamsF1 and BMW are fighting as a team. We'll see several improvements over the final six races and I really think we can close in."

Referring to some of 'black spots' of 2004, including the disqualifications in North America, Ralf's crash at Indianapolis and the brake problems in Spain, he said: "Certainly we made some mistakes as a team, and we were sometimes unlucky as a team. You have to understand, if you fight and try to catch up you take a bigger risk than usual."
