From the moment the FIA issued a 22-word statement announcing that Max Mosley was to stand down in October this year, rather than staying put until October 2005 as planned, the rumours began.

In the last 24 hours all manner of theories have been put forward.

It's a ploy to get the team owners to fall into line

Max is seriously ill and needs to retire

A major manufacturer has applied pressure

Although the conspiracy theorists will continues to come up with all manner of suggestions, the best idea is to simply wait until Mr Mosley takes centre stage at today's FIA Press Conference.

Knowing that he is leaving the job in just a few months time, and that therefore he has nothing to lose, Max will almost certainly let rip and speak his mind.
