Zonta quickest on final day at Paul Ricard

Toyota's Ricardo Zonta topped the timesheets on the final day of testing at Paul Ricard.

The Brazilian, partnered by Olivier Panis, posted a best time of 1:04.157, the fastest lap at the French circuit this year. However, it wasn't all plain sailing for the Japanese team.

"We had very different fortunes with the two cars," admitted Pascal Vasselon, "Olivier stopped earlier than expected with a small problem due to a shock on the front wing in the chicane.

"With Ricardo we have completed an extensive tyre test," he continued, "going through very different tyre specifications, which made the choice for Imola easy. So we have now fully completed our preparations for the race at Imola.

"Looking forward it is hard to predict where we stand, but I can say that our progress here compared to the last test is really positive."

"We tried many different tyre specifications during the long runs in the afternoon, as well as working on different aerodynamic set-ups," said Zonta. "We have made some improvement, which I hope proves well at Imola, because this is a circuit that is hard for graining, especially when the track is still dirty. Paul Ricard has a similar track surface and the tyre choice we've made this week seems to do well. Now we just need to keep concentrated and keep pushing."

"Overall, it was a positive week," added Panis, "we were working quite hard with the set-up to gain confidence with the car. Today, we had planned to do some long runs in the afternoon to achieve further results for the tyre choice at Imola, but my front wing broke from hitting the kerbs, which is unfortunate but is something that can happen. We are positive that we have made the right choice of tyres, yet, it is difficult to definitely say how we are coming along for the next race. But for sure Ricardo and I have found some encouraging things this week and we hope to score some further points at the coming races."

Giancarlo Fisichella was Renault's sole representative, and finished second quickest. At the wheel of the R26 04 chassis, the Italian was able to run his programme without any major problem and remained focused on tyre development with Michelin for the first European races.

"A very good day after two busy days here in Paul Ricard," said Christian Silk. "We completed our programme to prepare Imola and the tyre work was very encouraging. Giancarlo did a great job once again and seemed to be very satisfied with the car and its behaviour to set up changes and to the new envelops. We are going to Barcelona next week which promise to be a very busy session!"

Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Paffett continued their programmes for McLaren, the Spaniard, in the MP4-21, worked on front suspension, dampers and set-up alongside Michelin tyre testing for San Marino. Meanwhile, the Englishman focused on additional Michelin development in the interim MP4-20.

"This has been an intensive and productive three days of testing," said de la Rosa. "I have been working with the test team on a range of development programmes with MP4-21, including damper work for San Marino, front suspension and some more general set-up work. We are continuing to make positive progress, which we will carry over to next week when Kimi and Juan Pablo will be testing at Barcelona before the return to racing at Imola."

"My week has again been fully focused on Michelin development work," added Paffett. "With the mileage we have covered, we have been able to complete a number of activities within the programme, including the final stages of Imola selection. We used one engine since I started the test and we did quite a few more miles than you usually do over the course of two race weekends."

Nick Heidfeld joined Robert Kubica for the final day. The German worked on the set-up in the morning and validated aerodynamic parts, producing some interesting results. He also tested different brake materials. In the afternoon he worked on a tyre programme, but had to stop prematurely due to a hydraulic problem.

The Pole validated different set-ups and did some fine-tuning of the electronic systems. He then completed an extensive tyre test programme.
