BIOGRAPHY

Born in Duisburg in Germany, Andre and his family moved to Belgium when he was just two, the youngster growing up just 90 miles from Spa-Francorchamps.

Following the requisite apprenticeship in karts he switched to single-seaters in the early 90s, first in first in the Formula BMW Junior series and then the full German version.

Finishing fourth in the 2000 German F3 championship, the following year he heated to the UK to take part in the British series where he could only manage seventh. However, a strong performance which saw him finish 2nd in the Masters of F3 event at Zandvoort brought him to the attention of Jaguar Racing which recruited him as its test driver.

In 2002, still with Jaguar, he was overlooked' in terms of a race seat at Jaguar, the team opting for Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia.

At the end of the year, having only run in the Silverstone and Monza F1 tests, Andre contested a one-off Champ Car event for Dale Coyne and scored a point whilst also contesting a round of the FIA GT Championship with Freisinger Motorsport.

In 2003 he moved to Japan where he remained for many years racing in Formula Nippon and the Japanese Super GT Championship, winning the former title in 2011 (having finished runner-up once and third three times) and winning the latter series in 2006 and 2009.

He made his debut in endurance racing in 2009, taking part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, his performance earning him a drive with the works Audi Sport team in the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans.

He remained with Audi, winning the prestigious race in 2011 and 2012, whilst continuing his exploits in Formula Nippon (now Super Formula).

In 2014, still part of Audi's WEC team and Petronas Team TOM'S Super Formula effort, over a decade after he last drove an F1 car, Andre was called up to replace Kamui Kobayashi at the ailing Caterham team. Thus, he made his F1 race debut at the grand old age of 32.

Having out-qualified teammate Marcus Ericsson by almost a second, Andre’s race lasted just one lap before a hydraulics failure put an abrupt end to his debut. He was subsequently invited to race at the Italian Grand Prix, but declined as the team planned to run Roberto Merhi in the car for FP1, contrary to Andre's desire to take part in all the available running due to his lack of experience.

Taking all things into account, one wonders what might have happened had Jaguar stuck with the German, especially as the team subsequently morphed into Red Bull.
