Five Formula One Drivers Who Love Football

NEWS STORY
20/05/2022

Despite travelling around the world on the Formula One circuit, some of the most famous names in the sport do their best to find the time to follow their favourite football teams.

Whether it's on hesgoal tv or via live stream, they do their best to tune in to a match whenever they can. With such a diverse range of nationalities and backgrounds in Formula One, it's no surprise to see a number of different clubs in these drivers' hearts.

Here are five Formula One drivers who are crazy about football and the teams they support.

Lewis Hamilton (Arsenal/Chelsea)

British star Lewis Hamilton has long been touted as a big Arsenal fan, even sporting the famous red shirt during an interview with Gunners legend Thierry Henry. However, more recently, he's been in hot water with some supporters after he joined a consortium to try to buy Chelsea, Arsenal's London rivals - a bid which subsequently failed.

Hamilton tried to change gears on his love for the red side of London in an interview earlier this year.

Hamilton said possibly buying Chelsea would be “one of the greatest opportunities” and recalled his uncle being a big fan of the West London club, saying he'd attended multiple games of both sides. He went on to say: "I remember switching between the teams and getting it wrong, and my sister Sam punching me several times in the arm, basically beating me and saying you have to support Arsenal.”

Rival Max Versteppen was quick to mock Hamilton for his decision to join the consortium: "I thought he was an Arsenal fan? And if you are an Arsenal fan going for Chelsea, that it is quite interesting."

Max Verstappen (PSV)

Speaking of the Dutchman, Verstappen certainly isn't confused about who he supports - he's an avid PSV fan. Ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix earlier this year, the Red Bull driver reiterated his position on attempting to buy the football club which rivals the one you love:

"I am a PSV fan and I would never buy Ajax"

Verstappen certainly won't be betraying his favourite Eredivisie team any time soon.

Sebasian Vettel (Frankfurt)

German former multiple time World Champion Sebastian Vettel is extremely passionate about newly crowned UEFA Europa League Champions Eintracht Frankfurt. In an interview with Bundesliga.com earlier in his career, he described how he fell in love with SGE:

"I grew up in Heppenheim, which is less than half an hour's drive from Frankfurt. Eintracht were the only big club in that area at the time and they were the first professional team I saw at the Waldstadion. Once you fall for a club, you stick with it forever."

Charles Leclerc (Monaco)

24-year-old Frenchman Charles Leclerc is known to follow his local team AS Monaco through thick and thin, but isn't in any danger of getting on the pitch for them anytime soon. He is less than confident about his footballing gifts but has participated in charity matches in his home town alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham. Leclerc will hope that his team can return to the Ligue 1 title picture sooner rather than later.

Carlos Sainz (Real Madrid)

Carlos Sainz is a huge fan of Los Blancos and can regularly be seen celebrating their results on social media and in person when he gets the chance. Such is his commitment to the team that president Florentino Perez named him an honorary club member. The decorated driver is lauded for his allegiance to Real Madrid and for his outward passion towards the club. No fake fan here.
