Italian GP: Race team notes - McLaren

NEWS STORY
12/09/2021

Daniel Ricciardo: "Crazy, what an awesome day! We really set the tone from the start of the weekend. I think anyone that's seen the demeanour this weekend, they're not surprised. I'm really stoked that it turned into a victory. A big thanks to the team. Not only winning, but a one-two's incredible. A lot of hard work went into this and we really earned it out there. I'm really, really happy."

Lando Norris: "Obviously I'm so pleased for the whole team. It's such a cool moment for all of us. We've done an awesome job from the beginning of the weekend. From practice to qualifying, the decision to use the Soft tyres on Saturday, all of that set us up for today. We didn't get lucky, we had the pace, we were in the positions we wanted to be. We had to overtake, we had to defend, we had to do everything.

"It's an amazing result, I'm so happy for everyone. It's our first one-two in 11 years! Another podium for myself, a win for Daniel, but more importantly a one-two. So that as a combination is the coolest thing in the world. So, huge congrats to everyone and well-deserved."

Andreas Seidl, Team Principal: "Well, we did it! P1 and P2 at Monza. Congratulations to the entire team for a brilliant job all weekend. They pulled off an exceptional result today, under the pressure of knowing we had a competitive car and that a great race was possible.

"As a team, we've been waiting for this for quite some time. This is the first McLaren victory since 2012. We know we still have a lot of work to do on our journey, but this will be great motivation. Today, however, it's very important to celebrate the moment. Both Daniel and Lando put in brilliant performances all weekend, using to the maximum the hard work done in the garage, back at the factory and from our colleagues at HPP. Thanks to every single member of the team, our great fans and partners. Days like this are why we're all in the sport."

"I think that Zak Brown was more than entitled to take his place on the podium. It was his vision, drive and business smarts coupled with his own unique perspective as a racing driver that has got McLaren back on the road in a very strong and meaningful way. I would expect that if this same scenario presents again that Andreas Seidl will be up there for his share of the well earned glory. One can only hope that this breakthrough can be emulated more times in the future but there is absolutely no guarantee of that. At Monza everything came together at the right time and was no 'black swan' event! One must also remember that Zak Brown has finally put McLaren on a sound financial footing, or as sound as can be in these volatile global times, thus allowing them to invest in the future of F1. F1 is an expensive endeavour and without sponsors filling the fuel tanks you go nowhere. Well done Zak."

"I've been a McLaren fan since, I can't remember when.
As @wokingchap says, it's been a l o n g time coming.
The result of the last race was brilliant and hopefully a good launching point for further podiums and wins.
What was particularly good is that in the past 10 years it has been tracks like Hungary and Monaco that hopes have been pinned rather than high speed tracks like Monza.

@Lapps, Zak Brown has copped a truck load of criticism since Ron Dennis left, more so I think because of the way that happened than anything that Brown himself has done, though there has been times when it seemed on the outside, the marketing side of things was more important than other areas.
Zak got Seidl and others into the team and has endured the struggle from the outset so I have no issue with him being on the podium this time.
Hopefully there will be more opportunities for the team to put others up there too.
Leadership is extremely important in any organisation and I think that McLaren has finally got all its ducks in a row. Hopefully the design office has next years car sorted too.

Speaking of leadership, another team to watch is Williams with Capito at the helm.
He was chosen to lead McLaren but didn't get a shot, being "Ron's man".
Looks like he's already getting Williams sorted."

"Just a pity that Seidl built that Team, but Zak grabs the place on the podium. Perhaps Zak needs some lessons in people management. "

"Brilliant drive by both, and historic 1*2*. It's been a long time coming but we knew it eventually would. Well done."
