Carey seeking "quality over quantity" in terms of F1 calendar

NEWS STORY
02/03/2018

Since taking over the sport last January, a number of constant threads have appeared to weave their way into the fabric of F1 as Liberty Media looks to the future.

One of these is the desire to radically alter the calendar, not only in terms of expanding it but also running it on a regional basis starting in the east and gradually moving across the globe.

In terms of the number of races, from the outset the sport's new owners admitted that they wanted to see more races in their homeland, the United States, whilst also taking the sport back to countries that have fallen from the schedule over time.

This year the sport heads back to France and Germany, the former after an absence of ten years, while there is talk of a race in Copenhagen and the Netherlands, as F1 seeks to reap the benefits of the 'Max effect'.

However, speaking yesterday, according to Forbes, Chase Carey played down talk of expanding the calendar.

"We don't have a target number of races," he said. "Our real focus is quality over quantity but our focus is getting the races to be what they should be."

With talk that Hanoi and Miami could be on the calendar as early as next year - along with Bueno Aires if the money can be found for the hosting fees and track upgrades - remember those words "quality over quantity" when two more uninspiring street tracks are revealed in the quest from greater profits.

"Monaco should be the only Street Circus (sorry Circuit). Its got tradition, and its a challenge, but rarely much of a race.
Formula E is catering for those who want to watch open-wheel racing in Cities, and doing a pretty good, and improving job. "

"Your final sentence sums it up. Silverstone is quality but more street races are simply quantity. "
