Sebastian Vettel has dismissed thoughts of him seeking a move from Ferrari to Mercedes.

When Nico Rosberg dropped his bombshell on Friday, as the truth began to sink in, two names immediately came to mind as thoughts turned to who might/should replace the German at Mercedes.

It cannot be coincidence that one, Sebastian Vettel, is still trying to knock Ferrari into shape while the other, Fernando Alonso, gave up trying.

While the German team assesses the various CVs that have been sent in, still trying to decide whether it should opt for a proven winner or talented newcomer, Vettel has written himself out of the equation.

Speaking at the Finali Mondiali in Daytona, the four-time champion told reporters: "It is not a big secret that Kimi and I both have a contract for next year so it should be clear.

"A lot of things are happening but for us it is rather quiet which is a good sign," he continued, referring to Ferrari's 2017 programme. "We are focusing on our job that we have which is a lot of work for next year.

"There are a lot of changes to the car so a lot of effort is going in, and there could be a surprise," he added, "but we will have to wait and see.

"When the rules change things can move around. Hopefully it moves us up, and makes us stronger, but it is impossible now to have any expectations."

Asked about Rosberg's shock announcement, he said: "It is his decision and we should respect that.

"It is a very brave one because it is much easier to carry on, but if he feels it is time to stop, it is time to stop. You only have one life so you might as well spend it the way you want.

"Everybody is free to do what he or she wants," he continued. "I was 23 when I won my first title so I had a different mind-set which was that I wanted to go out and do it again. Looking back I can say I did. I love racing and I want to continue."

Asked who he thought might replace Rosberg, he said: "I don't know what is their plan, but we look after ourselves."
