McLaren plays down Alonso memory loss claims

NEWS STORY

McLaren has played down claims that following his accident Fernando Alonso had 'lost' twenty years of his life.

On Thursday, Spain's El Pais claimed that regaining consciousness following the crash he told doctors: "My name is Fernando, I race karts. I want to be a Formula One driver."

Indeed, the Spanish newspaper claims that at first the two-time world champion couldn't remember anything after 1995, at which time he was 13.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, team boss Eric Boullier says the Spaniard suffered a "normal concussion" with a loss of temporary memory.

"It's not as dramatic as you read in the media," said the Frenchman. "Everything is back to normal."

Earlier in the day, Alonso himself appeared to make fun of the claims, taking to Twitter he wrote: "In a few days the championship starts and we ran out 'imagination'. I propose a game with RT (re-tweet) to the most creative. #wheredidyouwakeuptoday."

In a subsequent tweet he revealed that he was in preparation for round two of the championship in Malaysia.

"Keep working good," he wrote. "30 min bike, 30 swim, 30 gym. Malaysia is one of the most demanding races, and we will be at 100 percent."

Confirming that Alonso has undergone various medical tests on his reaction times and that everything is normal, Boullier added: "We are monitoring until the end of the recovery time. As far as we are concerned, we want him to be in the simulator not to test him but rather to update him on what we have been doing over the last two weeks."

"Well we live in a modern world and the public have seen so many statements that turn out to be untrue what is anyone expected to believe?

The one statement I remember when Jonathan Aiken spoke about being tried for whatever "I have had the sword of Damocles hanging over me for many months, I am innocent" etc etc etc and was then promptly found guilty and sent down. (as have been a number of "media people" over the past couple of years of course, all protesting their innocence).

So maybe the old adage "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" should be remembered by all, and the first story should be the truth, the media should wait, relying on the fact the first story IS THE TRUTH, and the readers should not really comment based upon half truth and in many cases invented stories passed over by a story hungry media (this site excepted) on things they know very little, if anything about!

I suppose we are all guilty in some way or another but the way the system is working at the moment, everyone knows or think they know the truth, and everyone has a different truth that they feel is right!

What a mess!

The McLaren story will be one to watch and now lets wait and see what really happens!

"Even if everything is fine, the whole situation stank of something being hidden from the public. The whole situation was being downplayed at each and every stage. Perhaps they were just being guarded because of a sensationalist media (this did happen in Spain after all) and behind the scenes sponsorship negotiations."

"Looking forward to seeing him back in the drivers seat.

Wonder how the conspiracy theorists will twist this latest statement...or are we past all that silliness now?"
