Official: Caterham will race in Abu Dhabi

NEWS STORY
14/11/2014

Caterham has announced that it will be racing at the final Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi next week thanks to the support of the fans, who have helped the team raise enough money to make it possible through Crowdcube.

"We set ourselves a major challenge, but it's definitely been worth it!" said Finbarr O'Connell of Smith & Williamson, joint administrator of Caterham Sports Limited. "In only a week the fans have made the impossible, possible. We knew that the best way to keep this team alive and attract possible buyers was to show that it's still a racing team and be in Abu Dhabi for the finale, and there aren't enough words to say how grateful we are to all the fans that have made this possible.

"We now head to Abu Dhabi ready to show what a hard-working and positive group of people this is and to hopefully secure a future for the team. During the past few days the interest of many potential buyers has increased massively and by racing in Abu Dhabi the team will be showcasing itself as a live and functioning team that deserves to continue into 2015 and beyond. It has hard-working people, team spirit and experience and now it only needs a secure financial future which I'm very hopeful we can achieve. Once again, I'd like to reiterate that we are racing in Abu Dhabi thanks to all the fans out there - an achievement that will go down in F1 history and one that we can all be very proud of. We still need to raise a bit more cash so please do keep an eye on the Crowdcube website. Let's go racing!"

"We're thrilled to have helped get Caterham on to the grid for the season finale in Abu Dhabi," added Luke Lang, co-founder of Crowdcube. "It's fantastic that so many people have been inspired to support the team and crowd fund its return to Formula 1."

"J0sully1,
IMHO, That's racing and if they took out either Hamiton or Rosberg you would either please 50% or displease 50% of their followers, either way you cannot win! I know who I would like to see win and if the other guy cannot cope with slower cars then he does not deserve to win anyway! Racing we love it!"

"I hate to be the one to suggest it but ridiculously awful would it be if these guys come back to the grid and somehow one of them costs Nico or Lewis the championship..."

"I think the crowd has given 'Bonkers' Bernie a reply that he would do well to heed."

"Great to hear - don't know who they will get to drive, Kobayashi & Barrichello? I hate to see small teams leave the sport. There always has to be a back marker and none of the big investors what that role. So why not subsidize the smaller teams if you don't want to be the back marker. This is one reason why the big boys should help these smaller teams out. Also, think about cost escalations, how much will it cost to field a 3rd car that can't score points but still can steal points from you? Do you really think Bernie will assist the teams field a 3rd car? As Horner said - Red Bull can't afford a 3rd car while Boullier said McLaren cant have a 3rd car ready for 6 months. I am almost sure that fielding a 3rd car for Red Bull probably represents a big percentage increase equivalent to a large part of Marusian or Caterham full budget. Which is the wiser investment into the sport?"

"Interesting, read my post on the 2.11.2014 under "Bernie admits F1 has a problem" and then see the post "Caterham look at crowd funding" on the 7.11.2014.

Who suggested crowd funding then……………? Now Caterham go to Abu Dhabi. Seems as if this forum may work……… :-)"
