From next season the driver who achieves the most pole positions will be awarded a special trophy.

With fans still reeling from the news that the season ending race will see drivers awarded double points, the 2014 Sporting Regulations reveal that the sport's powers that be have missed another golden opportunity.

Rather than awarding points for pole position and/or fastest lap, which would add a little spice, the driver that starts from pole most times will get to take home a nice trophy.

Article 6.7 of the regulations reads: "A trophy will be awarded to the driver who sets the most pole positions during the championship season (see Article 36.2). In the event of a tie the holder of the greatest number of second places will be taken into account and, if there is still the tie, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so on until a winner emerges.

"If this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit."

Meanwhile, in the wake on the news that drivers will be allowed to choose their race numbers, which will continue with them throughout their F1 careers, the race number "must be clearly visible from the front of the car and on the driver's crash helmet."

"Good grief...just when you think it couldn't get any worse, how precisely does this improve anything for the fans??? I personally would like to see the reintroduction of a point awarded for fastest lap which would at least see some different strategies play out toward the end of a race."
