On the last Sunday in July, Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix. It was the last time a grand prix ended without Sebastian Vettel atop the podium as the four-time world champion has notched up seven consecutive wins since then. It's a feat previously achieved by just two men in the sport's entire sixty-four year history.

In 2004 Michael Schumacher won the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, beginning a winning streak that would last four months. Even in the midst of a Ferrari dominated era Schumacher's string of seven grand prix victories was an incredible show of strength, more so when one remembers he was 'taken out' whilst leading in Monaco. But for Juan-Pablo Montoya, Schumacher may have won thirteen consecutive grands prix that year.

Similarly, Alberto Ascari went unbeaten for more than a year, beginning at the 1952 Belgian Grand Prix, the Italian won nine grands prix without tasting defeat, though they were not consecutive events.

During the early years of the championship teams were not compelled to compete at every event, and as such most opted not to travel to the Indianapolis 500, Ferrari made the only attempt of note in 1952 when Ascari spun out at about quarter distance.

Neither Ferrari nor Ascari returned in 1953, technically ending his winning streak in Formula One after seven races. The weekend after Indianapolis Ascari won the Dutch Grand Prix, as he did next time out at Spa-Francorchamps. Mike Hawthorn's victory at the French Grand Prix halted that unbeaten run at nine non-consecutive grands prix.

Currently with seven consecutive wins to his name, Sebastian Vettel could today become the first driver to officially extend that record to eight.
