Difference of opinion at Ferrari?

NEWS STORY
16/10/2013

Whilst team boss Stefano Domenicali claims Ferrari is now fully concentrating on 2014, company president Luca di Montezemolo says the team remains focussed on 2013's remaining races.

With the constructors' title out of sight indeed, even its runner up spot under threat from Mercedes and Lotus, things are difficult for the Maranello outfit. So difficult that in the wake of Sunday's race, in an attempt to salvage something from almost nothing, the team boasted of how Fernando Alonso's 12 points for fourth moved him to the top of the all-time points scorers in Formula One even though, in the eyes of many, the statistic no longer has any relevance due to the numerous changes to the system.

Now, it appears, Ferrari is following the example of its rivals, switching focus from this year to next. "We have already switched 100% the activity at home (to 2014)," said Domenicali, according to ESPN. "We have still got something to bring to the track that we will try, but the technical office is completely dedicated to next year's project. That is very challenging for everyone."

Company president, Luca di Montezemolo, on the other hand, insists that the team hasn't yet given up on 2013.

"I read about assumed bellyaching or about the team concentrating only on 2014," he said. "I don't even want to hear that kind of talk: there are still four races to go where we will field Ferraris that are fighting for the podium with maximum determination from the drivers and the whole team.

"As for next season, there will be time enough to talk about it," he continued, "in fact I am pleased to see that the group dedicated to that task is working very hard with maximum concentration. Everyone is well aware what they must do."

Looking at the remaining races, Domenicali is fully aware of the threat from Mercedes and Lotus in terms of the runner-up spot, the Enstone outfit, in particular, appearing to be coming up on the outside.

"I have to say both (are a threat to Ferrari)," he said. "Lotus seems to have found a good qualifying pace, very close to ours and maybe a little bit better. They are also very good at managing the tyres, so if they qualify in front of us then it is difficult because either we do a good start and they are really difficult to handle.

"On the other hand Mercedes seems to have a better qualifying pace, and if they are in front in the race with another competitor like Lotus in between it will be difficult. For this reason I believe they are both very strong competitors and we need to be second up until the end of the season."
