FIA extends DRS zone

NEWS STORY
13/11/2011

Following concerns that the initial DRS zone for today's Grand Prix is too short, the FIA has opted to extend it by 75 metres.

On a track notorious for its lack of overtaking - well, it is a street circuit - the first detection zone is shortly before the hairpin (Turn 7) with the activation zone 470 metres down the following straight. However, this has now been moved back a further 75 metres.

Nonetheless, drivers remain sceptical with many of the belief that overtaking will remain difficult if not impossible. Indeed, being interviewed by the BBC following yesterday's qualifying session, Mark Webber left pitlane presenter Lee McKenzie struggling for words.

“I don't know how exciting the race is going to be to be honest,” he told McKenzie, who was keen to assure viewers that there was plenty to tune in for. “Hmm, I don’t know,” inisted the Australian, adding that the best hope for a good race was for McLaren to “stir things up on the first lap”.

That said, Paul McCartney and Britney Spears are anticipating a great race.
