Ecclestone uneasy with movable rear wing

NEWS STORY
01/03/2011

With even the most diehard F1 fan confused by the new movable rear wing, Bernie Ecclestone says he doesn't believe it will spice up the racing and could even prove dangerous.

If the boys down the Marlborough and users of the Pitpass forum are anything to go by, the introduction of a movable rear wing this season will not really spice up the action so much as add to the confusion as F1 introduces yet another costly silly rule. Indeed, just weeks ahead of the start of the season even the FIA is not entirely clear when the wing can be used.

Sebastian Vettel is one of the most vocal critics, claiming that the idea of a movable rear wing is only to entertain the TV audience, seemingly Bernie Ecclestone agrees.

"He's probably right," the F1 supremo told the official F1 website. "It is very difficult to control it by the stewards because the window of usage is very small. The chances for protests are inevitably there.

"To me this system looks pretty dangerous," he added. "What if the wings are not up again before the corner and the driver is lacking downforce? That could easily lead to incidents. We have to observe it carefully."

But by then it might well be too late.
